Fassbender’s nameless hit man is ostensibly the pinnacle of the type. David Fincher’s latest is a pastiche evoking French New Wave forefather Jean Pierre-Melville planted in the 21st century, as an unnamed assassin (Michael Fassbender) goes on a globe-trotting rampage of revenge following a botched assignment. The film is both a subversion of the hit man and a celebration.Īt first glance, The Killer is the kind of film that Linklater is taking aim at. Living a double life ultimately teaches him to become his best self beyond the boring homebody he used to be, setting up the assassin as, funnily enough, an aspirational figure. Gary, played with such intense charisma by Glen Powell that he cements himself as leading man material, embraces the falsehoods of hit men wholeheartedly, switching up disguises and personas to cater to his marks. They’ve been a mainstay of the summer blockbuster-full-throttle action thrillers, the John Wicks of the world-but Linklater’s offbeat comedy that has all the hallmarks of the endangered mid-budget studio film finds the fun in placing the archetype into an entirely new context. Linklater tells the viewer straight up that contract killers are a fabrication made up by Hollywood-an imaginary profession that just looks pretty fucking cool on camera. In Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, a comedy inspired by the actual fake assassin Gary Johnson, a college professor takes up a part-time gig as an undercover hit man to catch would-be murderers for the New Orleans police. It’s only fitting for a stranger-than-usual year for movies. But these new films from established directors take wildly different perspectives on such an enduring character, each funnier and weirder than the last. At the Venice Film Festival, it wasn’t hard to find the dominant thread: there were a lot of hit men movies. Once you spend enough time at a film festival, you inevitably begin to notice patterns-all the movies watched in quick succession start to become an indiscernible blur, and the mind draws connections just to make sense of it all.

NI’s guru Jan Ola Korte has rewritten the Blocks manual, which is well worth a read. And working inside Racks tends to solve some confusing parameter mapping that happens with Reaktor patches.īuilders making their own Blocks need to update their creations to add front-panel patches (which of course is the whole fun of this). You’ll also be able to use those User Blocks as part of your own Racks, and easily load them – which is also hugely useful when you’re loading up modular racks in DAWs and the like. You’ll be able to patch right on the front panel of User Blocks, just like the factory and third-party Blocks. Now it benefits from all the features of working in Racks. The Reaktor User Library is already full of tons of amazing user-created stuff. Reaktor 6.4’s most important breakthrough is allowing user-generated Blocks from the builder community. (If you’re on Windows, you may as I did run into this Registry bug I ran the uninstaller tool there on Reaktor, tried again, and was in!) DIY Blocks are finally really a thing Racks fixed that, but only for official NI Blocks or licensed modules.Įverything is included in Reaktor 6.4, available now as a free automatic update via Native Access. And preset storage and parameter management in hosts could be a chore. Patching on the front panel wasn’t possible at first. The transition was a little rough at first, though. But Reaktor Blocks demonstrated that Reaktor could still benefit from the usability and musicality of some limitations – a defined set of knobs and controls and patch points. Native Instruments after all started the whole company around the idea of making an on-screen, patchable music kit (Generator). Reaktor 6 was really early to the market of making software with the usability appeal of Eurorack. The latest free Reaktor build lets anyone make their own modular Blocks in Racks, with front-panel patching – and that means more toys and power for everybody. The Apple TV’s secret sauce is its integration with iPhone. Considering the price of Chromecast, they’re probably using every bit of data they can about you to better target you with ads once you’re on one of their web-based services. While Chromecast doesn’t have ads, Google’s entire business model is built on ads. This means you won’t see ads on Apple TV and they won’t use your data in ways others might. Unlike other streaming competitors, who typically don’t profit from the device, Apple makes money on their hardware. Just say the name of the show or movie and it’ll pop up and provide a default option with more options listed below the fold. It’s like using a giant iPhone.Īpple TV’s universal search with Siri is solid. If you’ve used iOS devices, the experience will feel familiar. Unfortunately, Android and PC users won’t have an easy way to mirror to Apple TV.Īpple TV has the most polished interface of any streaming device I’ve tried. AirPlay gets the job done, but it uses your phone’s battery and doesn’t operate independently. Mac and iPhone users can mirror their entire screen via AirPlay, or AirPlay content from individual apps that have the AirPlay icon (pointy triangle). Your phone can be used for other activities while casting without interrupting the stream, and casting doesn’t affect your phone’s battery life because the content is streamed directly on the Chromecast. Just use your phone app, then hit the cast button. The beauty of casting? You don’t have to configure or sign into apps on the streaming device itself. There are apps, like YouTube, where casting is my preferred way to watch, rather than use the app on the Chromecast. From a Mac or PC, your Chrome browser window can be sent to your TV by tapping the “cast” button, meaning any content in the world can be sent to your TV. Streaming services are castable from iPhone and Android devices as long as there’s a “cast” button in the app. There’s even the Apple TV app on both devices.īut there are Cast and AirPlay options for when you can’t find an app on the devices. You’ll get Amazon Video, Vudu, Hulu, Netflix, Showtime, HBO, Sling TV, YouTube, FuboTV, AT&T TV, Peacock, and YouTube TV, along with hundreds of other mainstream services. ) Content Both devicesīoth streaming devices are capable of displaying 4K HDR Dolby Vision, and they have Dolby Atmos audio.īoth systems have an app store without any obvious streaming service omission. If you're someone who subscribes to streaming services, this post is should have everything you need. (While I understand the appeal of finding free alternatives, I don't have personal experience with jailbreaking or torrenting, so my perspective may not be useful to those who use these methods to access streaming content. Want to learn how I reached this conclusion? Read on to see the detailed breakdown of the apps, interface, performance, and remotes that informed my overall impression. It’s much faster and has better privacy than Chromecast, but it’s not a great value for $149. On the other hand, Apple TV 4K (Gen 3) is great for iPhone users because of the remote and keypad integration. Also, make sure Bluetooth is activated (the icon should be blue). After months of testing, I determined Chromecast with Google TV is the streaming device most should buy because it’s an incredible value for $49, and it has a superior way of organizing content. If your iPhone has a Home button, you can do this by swiping up from the bottom edge if you have a newer handset, swipe down from the upper-right corner. You’ll see a message on your TV with instructions to get the Google Home app.ĭownload and install the Google Home app from the App Store. Plug the Chromecast dongle into your TV's HDMI port, and then plug its power supply into an electrical outlet. Here are some of the services that are compatible with Google Assistant: However, be sure to correctly identify the Chromecast device ("living room TV" in this example), so Google Assistant understands and casts to the correct destination. Google Assistant will then cast that episode to the Chromecast device connected to your TV. To help you get started, we’ve compiled a list of customizable templates for you.
